  3. Tech Tip Video – Turn On Edge’s Secret Battery Saver

We’ve all been there—you’re in the middle of a deep work session at a coffee shop or on a flight, and that dreaded “low battery” notification pops up. If you use Microsoft Edge, there is a built-in feature that acts like a “secret weapon” for your battery life.

It’s called Efficiency Mode, and it’s designed to stop your browser from being a power hog. Here is how to set it up in less than 60 seconds.

How to Enable Efficiency Mode

Efficiency Mode works by reducing CPU usage for tabs you isn’t actively using, giving your battery a much-needed breather.

  1. Open Settings: Click the three dots (…) in the top-right corner of your Edge browser.

  2. Navigate to Performance: Select Settings, then click on System and Performance in the left-hand sidebar.

  3. Toggle it On: Locate the Efficiency Mode switch and toggle it to On.

Customize Your Savings

Edge gives you the flexibility to decide exactly how aggressive you want to be with your power management:

  • Choose Your Trigger: You can set the mode to kick in only when your laptop is unplugged, when your battery is low, or keep it on all the time.

  • Go for “Maximum Savings”: If you are nowhere near a charger and need every last drop of juice, select the Maximum Savings option. This aggressively limits background activity to keep you online longer.

  • Put Tabs to Sleep: Scroll down a bit further in the same menu to find the Sleeping Tabs settings. You can choose exactly how long Edge should wait before “putting to sleep” an unused tab. Setting this to a shorter interval (like 5 minutes) can significantly boost performance.

Pro Tip: Putting tabs to sleep doesn’t close them! They stay right where they are; they just stop drawing power until you click on them again.
